Dr. Maribel Valle
Assistant Professor, Health Administration

After completing an undergraduate degree in psychology at Northwestern University,Mari began her professional life in Chicago as a child protection worker, working with families where there had been allegations of abuse andneglect. At the height of the crackepidemic, approximately 70 percent of her caseload was drug and alcoholimpacted. Frustrated with the lack ofprogress in child custody cases, she decided to address what she saw as theroot cause of the familial problems and completed a training program at GrantHospital in Addictions. She then workedfor 5 years as an Addictions Counselor in a program for addicted pregnant andpost-partum women at a federally qualified community health center. She earned a Master in Public Health inMaternal and Child Health in 1998, and a Ph.D. in Community Health Sciences in2002, both from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her doctoral dissertation was a mixed methodsstudy of injection drug users which examined the psychosocial impacts of HIVtesting, including the impact of testing positive on subsequent drug use andother risk behavior. She then completeda two year fellowship in Public Health Informatics at the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention during which she evaluated information systems at Medical Examiner and Coroner offices and established procedures for public health surveillance for possible bioterrorism threats.

Prior tojoining the faculty at USF, she was an Assistant Professor of Public Health atNorthern Illinois University from 2003 to 2011. She has experience teaching a variety of courses including programplanning, research methods, public health informatics, social and behavioralaspects of public health, and a capstone course for students completing the MPH.

Mari has two distinct research interests. First, she is interested in the use ofcomputer and information science to improve public health theory, research andpractice. She believes we are at acritical juncture in terms of the uses and abuses of technology and goodscience is necessary to guide management information systems planning andhealth care delivery systems. Publichealth surveillance, electronic medical records, and tele-health care deliveryare only a few of the areas that are in need of serious examination todetermine best practices and establish standard guidelines.

Secondly, she is interested in the psychosocial determinants of healthstatus. In particular, she would like to further explore how individuals manage adversity and the consequences of thosemanagement strategies on health. Although her work has primarily concerned itself with HIV/AIDS in the African American injection drug user population, she is also interested in the issues of homelessness and drug addiction.
