FREE attends the Myron Scholes Global Markets Forum

In front of the Gleacher Center

Chicago — September 27, 2011 - Financial Research & Education through Experience (FREE) took part in the first Myron Scholes Forum of the semester featuring Dr. Stephen Cecchetti, the economic adviser and head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank for International Settlements. Dr. Cecchetti’s presentation, held in the Gleacher Center, was appropriately titled “Global Imbalances: Current Accounts and Financial Flows”.

Global imbalances have been at the forefront of many debates among academics and policymakers for quite some time now. In addition to reading and discussing the headlines about the current economic environment, this semester, FREE has really focused in keeping up with the latest debates and current events involving economic policy. FREE realizes that the global movements of capital and products in the modern economy are so complex that they have fundamentally changed the nature of business in the 21st century. This has generated a lot of confusion among policymakers and the public. FREE has assumed the role in preparing its members with a fundamental understanding of the complexity behind these changes by enhancing the understanding of capital flows across borders.

A week prior to the event, FREE was able to host a briefing in the Zeller Conference Room by Dr. David Gordon on the economic impact of global imbalances.

At PJ Clarke's Restaurant
"It is interesting to know just how much of an effect currency value has on imports/exports. Obviously with the negative effect that we have witnessed on the dollar, my biggest question to Dr. Gordon was, why? He explained by way of a very simple diagram that described the value of foreign currencies and a relationship that in short reads: Low Value--Cant buy much and High Value--Can buy more.” said Timothy Plett, FREE co-founder.

In addition to Dr. Gordon’s insight, FREE members who attended the Myron Scholes Forum had the distinct opportunity to hear some of  Dr. Cecchetti’s thoughts on these issues.

“Stephen Cecchetti advised students to not be the businessman or woman that the text book tells you to be” said Samantha Cepl, VP of FREE. She continued, “during these crucial times, we need to be innovative in solving our current deficit crisis. Participating in an event such as the Myron Scholes Global Markets Form helps current undergraduate students think beyond the textbook, by hearing a very diverse set of ideas from all ages.”
